Angelfall (Review)

Penryn and The End of Days: Angelfall | Susan Ee
Published by: Hodder & Stoughton, May 23rd 2013
Genre: YA, Post-Apocalyptic, Dystopia, Paranormal
Pages: 326
Format: Paperback

It's been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels' stronghold in San Francisco where she'll risk everything to rescue her sister and he'll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

REVIEW

Angelfall is a haunting look at a future destroyed by angels. Penryn and her family are trying to escape a world turned dangerous with savage street gangs when an angel is thrown into their path and his wings are savagely cut off. Angels are deadly, creatures who have turned the world into a desolate wreck, but when Penryn's sister Paige is taken by one of the creatures, she makes a deal with the wingless angel to get her back.

Angelfall is dark, horrifying, and full of despair. It's a twisted take on the atypical angels as they're presented these days. The angels in this book are not benevolent, caring creatures - they are vicious warriors who kidnap children, destroy entire cities, and make life hell.

This book is addictive, exciting from beginning to end. The plot is driven by desperation and need, the world gritty and a terrifying place to be in. Penryn, the main character, is compelling and couragous, and it's almost always her loyalty and fierce determination that drives the plot and makes this story alive, something real and raw and bigger than fiction. Raffe is an intriguing antogaonist/MC/potential love interest. Nothing about him is simple or easy to determine. He's a thousand questions all wrapped up in a furtive personnality and the body of a ... well, of an angelic soldier.

I went into this book with moderate hopes. Firstly, I thought it was an urban fantasy. Secondly, I thought it'd be your general girl-meets-angel type story - romance, fluff, senseless decision making, you know, the norm. And thirdly, I did not expect such an amazing main character, a smart, amusing, and hopeless voice, or a world so expertly built by Susan Ee to be both familiar to those who read Dystopian and Post-Apocalyptic and entirely unique.

This story will stay with me for a while, I suspect. Lucky the sequel is out soon! (Now all I have to do is scrounge for money...)

Read-a-thon (Days 1 & 2)

Well, I'm starting my read-a-thon. Who cares if no one wants to join me - I have a fancy banner! Also motivation, that's a thing I have. Wow. Rare. Let's do this thing.

Day 1

Sadly my enthusiasm in the introduction was ruined when sickness struck and took away all my good intentions, leaving me with a violent stomach, aching bones, and other horrors. Because of this rogue illness I did nothing but sleep all day. It sucks.

Thoughts: I needed this so much after Allegiant disappointing. Also it's a post-apocalyptic book with supernatural causes???? I've been looking for a book like this all year and nobody thought to tell me it was sat on my bookshelf??

Day 2

Much better health-wise, though I did have to break my streak to go for an eye exam. Luckily my eyesight is fine and my lens requirements only changed a little bit, so it didn't hinder my reading much.

Allegiant (Review)

Divergent: Allegiant | Veronica Roth
Published by: HarperCollins, October 22nd 2013
Genres: YA, Dystopia
Pages: 526
Format: Hardback
Source: Purchased

One choice will define you.

What if your whole world was a lie?
What if a single revelation—like a single choice—changed everything?
What if love and loyalty made you do things you never expected?

The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.

REVIEW

Let me just start by saying that my mind, heart, and soul was convinced that Tobias would be the one to die. I was so relieved when I found out he didn't that I cried so much my throat hurt. It wasn't a fun night to be around me.

Allegiant felt like a step down from Insurgent and Divergent in some ways, but I think that had a lot to do with having to get to know a completely new setting, new people, and a new reality. It went in a totally different way than I expected and I was disappointed in both the story and myself for expecting it to go the way I expected it to. Whew, that's a lot of usage of the word 'expect'. I'd geared myself up for it ending a certain way - they'd go outside the fence, greet death and terrible things, some would die along the way, but eventually they'd triumph and create factions in the new world. Oh how I was wrong.

There were days when I couldn't read this book. I had to put it aside and read something else because it was just so overwhelming. But it was as torturous as the other two books and consistent in character and voice so ... I'll just assume the unexpected everything made this book less impacting to me. I wanted to know about the city I'd invested myself so fully in, not this flimsy paradise compound in the middle of hell. I hoped, at least, they'd be forced to live on the fringe and that would bring in new conflicts and dangers. Nope.

Never the less, I was still wrenched with emotion, torn apart with anguish at Tris and Four's arguments, and thrilled with fights and combat at times (though not enough!! This is what it was missing) like I was in both Divergent and Insurgent. And the ending felt right, like it was the only way it could have ended. I just wish the middle had had a bit more ... something.

God, this was meant to be a mini review. This is a full on ramble. I haven't even got out what I wanted to say yet:

Some books are bigger than others, not in size but in what they contain, how they make us feel, and the meaning they hold for us. This is one of them.

To sum up the trilogy:

Agonising, heart-pounding, unforgettable.

Poison Dance (Review)

Poison Dance | Livia Blackburne
Published by: Lion's Quill Press
Genre: YA, High Fantasy
Pages: 54
Format: E-book
Source: Author, for honest review

James is skilled, efficient, and deadly, a hired blade navigating the shifting alliances of a deteriorating Assassin’s Guild. Then he meets Thalia, an alluring but troubled dancing girl who offers him a way out—if he’ll help her kill a powerful nobleman. With the Guild falling apart, it just might be worth the risk. But when you live, breathe, and love in a world that’s forever flirting with death, the slightest misstep can be poison.

REVIEW

Set in the world of Midnight Thief, a forthcoming title from Disney-Hyperion, Poison Dance tells of James, an assassin. With its leader dead, and power shifting, the Guild he's a part of has become dangerous, and James and his friends have one chance to leave - If he trains a dancer named Thalia to kill, she will give them the means, and enough money, to flee.

I liked James from the beginning. He was different to most male MCs I'd read, acted because of his mind and not because of moronic insta-love (like a thousand males I could mention), and he thought with an unfiltered honesty that I admired. I really began to love him, though, when he showed a softness when it came to Thalia.

The relationship between James and Thalia developed naturally. It didn't feel forced, rushed, or unfeasible, which was really uncommon and so nice to read. With assassins, caravaners, and a beautiful dancer with a hidden motive for murder, there's never a boring or lackluster chapter (again uncommon, especially for shorts, and even more especially for the genre).

Well written, with lush descriptions, genuine characters, and a vivid world. I thoroughly enjoyed Poison Dance and am excited to read more of this world in Midnight Thief.

Ahh So Spooky (week-long Halloween read-a-thon)

On Monday I will be starting a week-long reading spree to cut down my reading list, and have attempted to make the books vaguely Halloween themed. Because HALLOWEEN!

If, on the off chance, you want to join me, I'll be starting at 00:00 Monday (October 28th) and finishing at 23:59 the following Sunday (November 3rd). I'll be reading four to five books in an attempt to not be too ambitious, but you can read as many or as few as you like, in any genre, at any length.

These are the books I'm going to read:

and this amazing sounding book which I have a galley of

This is the format I'll be recording my progress in:

Winter reading list

I was going to make a Stacking The Shelves post, but I haven't posted one for so long that I've accrued about a million books, either in print, digitally, or by galley. Basically I have a lot to read over the coming months, and instead of bundling it into a STS post, I thought a to-read post would be far better suited.

So, before the new year I will attempt to read -

These print books:

And these digital books (of which I have limited myself to four):

AND these galleys:

You ever just sit down and think there are too many books, what have I got myself into?
This is my life now. It's a good thing I love to read.

Timepiece (Review)

Hourglass: Timepiece | Myra McEntire
YA, Science Fiction

Characters ★★★
Setting ★★★
Writing Style ★★★

A threat from the past could destroy the future. And the clock is ticking...

Kaleb Ballard was never supposed to be able to see ripples - cracks in time. Are his powers expanding, or is something very wrong? Before he can find out, Jonathan landers, the man who tried to murder is father, reappears. Why is he back, and what, or whom, does he want?

In the wake of Landers' return, the Hourglass organization is given an ultimatum. Either they find Jack and the research he's stolen on the people who might carry the time gene, or time will be altered - with devastating results for the people Kaleb loves most.

Now Kaleb, Emerson, Michael, and the other Hourglass recruits have no choice but to use their unusual powers to find Landers. But where do they even start? And when? And even if they succeed, it may not be enough...

REVIEW

Timepiece was fast-paced and dangerous, with stakes much higher than Hourglass (or at least for me, since I didn't completely care what happened to Michael). This book grounded me more in the emotions of Kaleb than it ever did with Em. I fell hard for Lily as Kaleb did, but wasn't really fussed with Michael as a love interest. In fact I grew to love him in Timepiece because of his brotherly relationship with Kaleb. There was just something about Hourglass that kept me removed, but Timepiece had none of that.

I much prefer Kaleb's voice to Em's, and I loved the way his perspective clearly showed him falling in love. Kaleb was sweet and infuriating, and utterly honest. The development of his relationship and interest in Lily progressed in a very real way from lust to fierce love.

I also liked how this book took the characters to different places - it was nice to go somewhere other than Ivy Springs and meet new characters. ((I'm a little tired of reading books set in small Southern towns. This is probably my fault for my choice of books but ... it was refreshing to go to a city that felt bigger and less claustrophobic))

The introduction of Teague and Chronos was unexpected and quite brilliant. Not only were the MCs threatened by Jack Landers and his manipulative plot, but the new antagonists made staying alive feel utterly impossible. I cannot forsee a way out of this, though I'm going to assume Lily will find the Infinityglass, because Teague and Jack are a thousand steps ahead, always rendering anyone's efforts hopeless.

I loved this book so much more than Hourglass, and I thought it was much better written as it was capable of sucking me into the story - something the first book never did. I can only hope that Infinityglass will be even better.

Ode to Strange Chemistry

Alright, I'll be up front about this: there's no ode. I know, false advertising, but this post is about Strange Chemistry, so it was only half a lie...

Today, it seems, is my day for discovering past and future Strange Chemistry gems. In the past I've read The Woken Gods by Gwenda Bond, and The Weight of Souls by Bryony Pearce (which I love love love), and after reading them I started to develop a tiny crush. Publisher crush. (Yes, that's a thing now.) So I knew they published amazing books, but I didn't quite realise how many amazing books they published. Hint: IT'S A LOT.

Because I am super deep in love with Strange Chemistry, and because I have a blog, I thought I would (you can guess where this is going, right ...?) make a blog post! About the many amazing books, past and future, from Strange Chemistry. Because every single person needs these books, and this publisher, in their life.

I tried to narrow this down to a neat number and failed, so this post is super long. Apologies! (You can click on the images to make them bigger because these covers are SO PRETTY *stares forever)

Shift | Kim Curran

At first, he thinks the power to shift is pretty cool. But as his world quickly starts to unravel around him he realises that each time he uses his power, it has consequences; terrible unforeseen consequences. Shifting is going to get him killed.
In a world where everything can change with a thought, Scott has to decide where he stands.

Poltergeeks | Sean Cummings

15-year-old Julie Richardson is about to learn that being the daughter of a witch isn't all it's cracked up to be. When she and her best friend, Marcus, witness an elderly lady jettisoned out the front door of her home, it's pretty obvious to Julie there's a supernatural connection.

In fact, there's a whisper of menace behind increasing levels of poltergeist activity all over town. After a large-scale paranormal assault on Julie's high school, her mother falls victim to the spell Endless Night. Now it's a race against time to find out who is responsible or Julie won't just lose her mother's soul, she'll lose her mother's life.

Broken | A. E. Rought

Imagine a modern spin on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein where a young couple’s undying love and the grief of a father pushed beyond sanity could spell the destruction of them all.

A string of suspicious deaths near a small Michigan town ends with a fall that claims the life of Emma Gentry's boyfriend, Daniel. Emma is broken, a hollow shell mechanically moving through her days. She and Daniel had been made for each other, complete only when they were together. Now she restlessly wanders the town in the late Fall gloom, haunting the cemetery and its white-marbled tombs, feeling Daniel everywhere, his spectre in the moonlight and the fog.

When she encounters newcomer Alex Franks, only son of a renowned widowed surgeon, she's intrigued despite herself. He's an enigma, melting into shadows, preferring to keep to himself. But he is as drawn to her as she is to him. He is strangely... familiar. From the way he knows how to open her locker when it sticks, to the nickname she shared only with Daniel, even his hazel eyes with brown flecks are just like Daniel's.

The closer they become, though, the more something inside her screams there's something very wrong with Alex Franks. And when Emma stumbles across a grotesque and terrifying menagerie of mangled but living animals within the walls of the Franks' estate, creatures she surely knows must have died from their injuries, she knows.

((I need this boooook. It sounds so so good.))

The Assassin's Curse | Cassandra Rose Clarke

Ananna of the Tanarau abandons ship when her parents try to marry her off to another pirate clan. But that only prompts the scorned clan to send an assassin after her. When Ananna faces him down one night, armed with magic she doesn't really know how to use, she accidentally activates a curse binding them together.

To break the spell, Ananna and the assassin must complete three impossible tasks--all while grappling with evil wizards, floating islands, haughty manticores, runaway nobility, strange magic...and the growing romantic tension between them.

Micah Grey, a runaway living on the streets, joins the circus as an aerialist’s apprentice and soon becomes the circus’s rising star. But Gene and Micah have balancing acts of their own to perform, and a secret in their blood that could unlock the mysteries of Ellada.

((I am getting this A.S.A.P.!!!! I don't care if I have to sell my soul for money. I'm buying it.))

When The World Was Flat And We Were In Love | Ingrid Jonach

Looking back, I wonder if I had an inkling that my life was about to go from ordinary to extraordinary.

When sixteen-year-old Lillie Hart meets the gorgeous and mysterious Tom Windsor-Smith for the first time, it’s like fireworks — for her, anyway. Tom looks as if he would be more interested in watching paint dry; as if he is bored by her and by her small Nebraskan town in general.

But as Lillie begins to break down the walls of his seemingly impenetrable exterior, she starts to suspect that he holds the answers to her reoccurring nightmares and to the impossible memories which keep bubbling to the surface of her mind — memories of the two of them, together and in love.

When she at last learns the truth about their connection, Lillie discovers that Tom has been hiding an earth-shattering secret; a secret that is bigger — and much more terrifying and beautiful — than the both of them. She also discovers that once you finally understand that the world is round, there is no way to make it flat again.

An epic and deeply original sci-fi romance, taking inspiration from Albert Einstein’s theories and the world-bending wonder of true love itself.

The Woken Gods | Gwenda Bond

The more things change…

Five years ago, the gods of ancient mythology awoke all around the world.

The more things stay the same…

This morning, Kyra Locke is late for school because of an argument with her father.

Seventeen-year-old Kyra lives in a transformed Washington, D.C., dominated by the embassies of divine pantheons and watched over by the mysterious Society of the Sun that governs mankind’s relations with the gods. But when rebellious Kyra encounters two trickster gods on her way home, one offering a threat and the other a warning, it turns out her life isn't what it seems. She escapes with the aid of Osborne "Oz" Spencer, a young Society field operative, only to discover that her scholar father has disappeared with a dangerous Egyptian relic. The Society needs the item back, and they aren’t interested in her protests that she knows nothing about it or her father's secrets.

Now Kyra must depend on her wits and the suspect help of scary Sumerian gods, her estranged oracle mother, and, of course, Oz--whose first allegiance is to the Society. She has no choice if she’s going to recover the missing relic and save her father. And if she doesn't? Well, that may just mean the end of the world as she knows it.

Holy crap this is long, I'm gonna make a separate post for future releases! These aren't the only Strange Chemistry books; these are just the ones I've added to my GR shelves.

So many incredible books!!! I think I need to move in with Strange Chemistry. I could just live with them and drool over the pretty covers and their wondrous insides. I could be the Legendary Strange Chemistry Hermit. Or I could just continue to beg for titles from Netgalley and use my Super Real Mind Powers to hypnotise someone into sending me physical ARCs... (One day it will work!!)

So, if you haven't read any of Strange Chemistry's titles ... have you been living under a rock??? In a post-apocalyptic world in which books no longer exist??? Been too busy traveling the universe with The Doctor to get your hands on a book??? No? Then you have no excuse! Go read them now!

This post took hours. I need to lay down.
