Grave Mercy (RC Review)

His Fair Assassin: Grave Mercy | Robin LaFevers
Published by: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, April 3rd 2012
Genre: YA, Historical
Pages: 549
Format: Ebook
Source: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, via Netgalley

Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?

Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.

Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

This book has been on my tbr list for years. Two years, in fact. So I heaped a lot of expectations on this book, and it more than satisfied my hopes. I got it into my head that it was high fantasy, but it turned out to be historical, set in Brittany, and I couldn't have been happier about that.

The world building is flawless, the details and lush backdrop bring the book to life and give Ismae's story a sharp, real feeling. I fell pretty hard for this book from the get go. The story is dark and unforgiving, and the hint of magic lured me in while still feeling true to the period. I especially loved how St. Mortain is prominent through the whole book, an omniscient being always mentioned and there, a guide of actions and motives. It's nice, also, to see religion treated with an honest eye, instead of the villainy of so many books.

There are so many things about Grave Mercy that impressed me. The integrity and bravery of Ismae, along with her sensibleness and how lethal she was. The allure of Gaval, and how very unique a love interest he was. He felt like a genuine, real person, neither the brooding asshole or the sexy alpha stereotypes that occur so often. He's complex and genuine and I wish there was more of this book so I could see where his life, and Ismae's, goes. I was especially impressed by how dire and stern the court politics felt, and how none of the period drama, the betrayals, and the grittiness of it was tamed for a YA audience.

Robin LaFevers has stolen a great piece of my heart with this book, and I expect more pieces will be stolen by the following books in the His Fair Assassin series.

Reading round up (53)

Reading round up is a weekly journal where I record my daily reading progress, my thoughts on each book as I read it, and any books I've acquired during the week.

17th November

Read 106 pages of
Cress by Marissa Meyer and I'm super into it. These books could go nowhere, have no plot, and I wouldn't care. The characters, relationships, and dialogue are enough to carry them.

18th November

I woke up crazy early, read 30 pages of Cress, then went back to sleep. The sign of a truly good book, folks, is when it lures me even more than sleep.

Cress (Review)

The Lunar Chronicles: Cress | Marissa Meyer
Published by: Puffin, February 6th 2014
Genre: YA, Science fiction
Pages: 550
Format: Paperback
Source: Purchased

In this third book in the Lunar Chronicles, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, now with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.

Their best hope lies with Cress, a girl imprisoned on a satellite since childhood who's only ever had her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker. Unfortunately, she’s just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.

When a daring rescue of Cress goes awry, the group is separated. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a high price. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing prevent her marriage to Emperor Kai. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only hope the world has.

Holy crap on a cracker, Cress

What am I supposed to do with all these emotions? I'm angry and scared and overjoyed and I want to scream. All my babies are canon and working together and being honest. Cress is a sweetheart and a welcome addition to the crew, and her relationship with Thorne just made me feel warm and happy. I love how they're equally dependent on each other and how they balance and how Cress blushes and Thorne charms and I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. But oh God, the ending. This book has too much everything - too much romance, too much action, too much danger, too much feeeeeelings, too much friends bonding and spaceships and men brooding and ladies kicking ass - and my tiny heart can't handle it.

I need Winter NOW or I will literally, probably, die.

Reading round up (52)

Reading round up is a weekly journal where I record my daily reading progress, my thoughts on each book as I read it, and any books I've acquired during the week. I'm having an awful week so hopefully the books will be nice to me.

10th November

Read nothing because I felt shitty.

11th November

I started Blue Lily, Lily Blue (77 pages) and so far it's awful and awesome and confusing.

12th November

Currently Reading: Blue Lily, Lily Blue | Maggie Stiefvater
Current page/percent: page 196
Read today: 119 pages
Thoughts: Please let Pynch be canon.

13th November

Currently Reading: Blue Lily, Lily Blue | Maggie Stiefvater
Current page/percent: 389 pages
Read today: 193 pages
Thoughts: What?

14th November

Started A Wicked Thing by Rhiannon Thomas (16%) and I'm not sure about it right now. It's missing a lot of stuff I like. Namely: a threat, danger, a character with actual drive and a backbone. (Why is she going along with everything with barely a question???)

15th November

Currently Reading: A Wicked Thing | Rhiannon Thomas
Current page/percent: 71%
Read today: 55%
Thoughts: This book is so flat. Like the general mood of it is fine, and the characters are fine, and the plot is fine, but where's the excitement, the danger, the motivation to keep reading? Why introduce a romance at all if you're going to get rid of it? What is the point of Isabelle/a?

16th November

Skim read the end of A Wicked Thing. Meh. I also started Cress by Marissa Meyer (50 pages). I need all my OTPs to be canon in this book. Pls.

Blue Lily, Lily Blue (Review)

The Raven Cycle: Blue Lily, Lily Blue | Maggie Stiefvater
Published by: Scholastic, October 21st 2014
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Pages: 389
Format: Paperback
Source: Purchased

There is danger in dreaming. But there is even more danger in waking up.

Blue Sargent has found things. For the first time in her life, she has friends she can trust, a group to which she can belong. The Raven Boys have taken her in as one of their own. Their problems have become hers, and her problems have become theirs.

The trick with found things though, is how easily they can be lost.

Friends can betray.
Mothers can disappear.
Visions can mislead.
Certainties can unravel.

The thing I love about these books is how different they are to anything else out there. The story is truly original, captivating, and packed full of real magic. The characters are genuine people, intricate and flawed, and the relationships are gritty and painful and wonderful. The plot of Blue Lily, Lily Blue was twisty and complex, subtle in parts and severe in others. I loved it, though I don't understand parts of it even now, having finished it. I need to read it at least a hundred more times.

Reading round up (51)

Reading round up is a weekly journal where I record my daily reading progress, my thoughts on each book as I read it, and any books I've acquired during the week. Off to Edinburgh for Bonfire Night!! Super excited.

3rd November

I'm still reading Bone Gap by Laura Ruby (3% read) off and on, but it's super slow so I'm focusing on Wild by Alex Mallory (17%) because my review is way overdue. I don't mind it so far. A little slow, though.

4th - 6th November

I don't know exactly how much I read over these three days because I was watching fireworks and visiting galleries, but I'm up to 39% of Wild and totally bored. I don't like either MC, the plot is non-existent, and the book is SO SLOW.

7th November

I started Monstrous by MarcyKate Connolly (26%) because I need a middle grade book to pick me up after Wild and keep me going with the dragging-along pace of reading Bone Gap.

8th November

Currently Reading: Monstrous | MarcyKate Connolly
Current page/percent: 77%
Read today: 51%
Thoughts: This book is really good. I like everything.

9th November

Currently Reading: Monstrous | MarcyKate Connolly
Current page/percent: 100%
Read today: 23%
Thoughts: WTF WAS THAT ENDING? What a great message to send to kids - that only perfect people get H.E.A.
