Zenn Scarlett (Review)

Zenn Scarlett: Zenn Scarlett | Christian Schoon
Published by: Strange Chemistry, May 7th 2013
Genre: YA, Science fiction
Pages: 304
Format: Paperback

When you're studying to be exoveterinarian specializing in exotic, alien life forms, school... is a different kind of animal.

Zenn Scarlett is a resourceful, determined 17-year-old girl working hard to make it through her novice year of exovet training. That means she's learning to care for alien creatures that are mostly large, generally dangerous and profoundly fascinating. Zenn’s all-important end-of-term tests at the Ciscan Cloister Exovet Clinic on Mars are coming up, and, she's feeling confident of acing the exams. But when a series of inexplicable animal escapes and other disturbing events hit the school, Zenn finds herself being blamed for the problems. As if this isn't enough to deal with, her absent father has abruptly stopped communicating with her; Liam Tucker, a local towner boy, is acting unusually, annoyingly friendly; and, strangest of all: Zenn is worried she's started sharing the thoughts of the creatures around her. Which is impossible, of course. Nonetheless, she can't deny what she's feeling.

Now, with the help of Liam and Hamish, an eight-foot sentient insectoid also training at the clinic, Zenn must learn what's happened to her father, solve the mystery of who, if anyone, is sabotaging the cloister, and determine if she's actually sensing the consciousness of her alien patients... or just losing her mind. All without failing her novice year....

If you'd have told me, before going into this book, I'd have encountered a cloister of alien vets I'd have said you were lying. And then screamed in excitement. Of course I could have told myself this, had I read the blurb. But I didn't. All I needed to see was the word exovet and I was sold.

But a cloister of exovets! A cloister! This is literally everything I never knew I wanted. Zenn Scarlett is by far the most imaginative science fiction novel I have read, and I fell in love with it so hard and fast.  The world building is without fault, and without conforming to the stereotypical Martian colony I keep reading about, which made this book fascinating. Not to mention the array of alien species - much wonder!

Zenn is a strong main character, determined and impulsive, she gets herself into all manner of bad situations, and always manages to fix the problems she's caused. But what really made this novel amazing, for me, was the treatment and inclusion of alien characters. Katie is my all time favourite. I love how, without verbally speaking, she's intelligent and has a personality, instead of being a character-less supporting alien character, as I have found in other, lesser novels. Hamish is also a fascinating character and a real breakthrough for me. I never would have thought I'd empathise and come to adore an insect, given they scare the ever-loving crap out of me, not to mention an eight foot insect.

Zenn Scarlett was a wonderful shock of a book. I wanted it to be amazing and groundbreaking and it was everything I'd hoped. A YA sci fi that doesn't dull down the science for the obviously dumb teenagers (You wanna talk about how irritating and insulting it is when that happens? Because I've been insulted far too many times to recall), a cast of characters as different as they come, and a story so unique you'll fly through the book as quick as I did (a day and a half!!) Highly recommend.

Out today: Rebel

Rebel | Amy Tintera
from HarperTeen

The sequel to the action-packed Reboot is a can't-miss thrill ride, perfect for fans of James Patterson, Veronica Roth, and Marie Lu.

After coming back from death as Reboots and being trained by HARC as soldiers, Wren and Callum have finally escaped north, where they hope to find a life of freedom. But when they arrive at the Reboot Reservation, it isn't what they expected. Under the rule of a bloodthirsty leader, Micah, the Reboots are about to wage an all-out war on the humans. Although Wren's instincts are telling her to set off into the wilderness on their own and leave the battle far behind, Callum is unwilling to let his human family be murdered. When Micah commits the ultimate betrayal, the choice is made for them. But Micah has also made a fatal mistake . . . he's underestimated Wren and Callum.

The explosive finale to the Reboot duology is full of riveting action and steamy love scenes as Wren and Callum become rebels against their own kind.

My rating: ★★★★☆
From my review: (x)

The thing I love the most about this duology is how unique it is. It's science fiction without being overly focused on the science side, it's horror without being obvious, it's romance without being solely focused on kissing and stuff (though, don't worry, there's definitely kissing and stuff), and it's also a high impact thriller and a subtle dystopia.

Reading round up (26)

Reading round up is a weekly journal where I record my daily reading progress and my thoughts on each book as I read it. Just read galleys, just read galleys...

5th May

Currently reading: The Taking | Kimberly Derting
Current page/percent: 100%
Read today: 45%
Thoughts: Took a while to get going but ended up as a really good book in the end.

6th May

Started The Fearless (13%). I did the thing where you write titles on slips of paper, fold them up, and choose one at random, and it gave me this. Haven't yet read Acid, so I don't know what to expect, but I'm hoping for awesome. (Also more British YA yassss)

7th May

Didn't read any of The Fearless, but I read The Wandering from front to back in preparation of the next draft of it. That should probably count towards my finished this week.

8th May

Threw a total 360 and read a third of My Soul To Take by Rachel Vincent (116 pages), because every time I passed my shelves it looked at me. It's pretty awesome already, and I just needed a quick, good PNR to dive into. Also I'm really not that interested in The Fearless at the moment. I might put it on hold for a week or so.

9th May

Current page/percent: page 242
Read today: 126 pages
Thoughts: I reeeeeeeeally like this.

10th May

Current page/percent: page 345
Read today: 103 pages
Thoughts: I need more.

11th May

Didn't read anything today. Actually I didn't do anything today.

Books finished this week: 2
(Dammit, I broke off from just reading galleys. I knew this would happen. In my defense, The Fearless didn't grip me at all.)

~

Books added to my collection:

The Liberator | Victoria Scott
I'm not even sure if I'm gonna like this series, but this book was £0.73. Also why do the covers look more erotica than urban fantasy? Is that why the series has been so wildly successful, which is unusual for a UF?

I also bought Warm Up, a short story by V.E.Schwab, author of Vicious which I am dying to get my hands on and finish (I got a 100 page preview which KILLED ME.) I'm getting back into an old writing project this May, which feels a lot like coming home, so I have quite a bit of free time to read - thank God. I feel like I've been hampered by writing this past two months. Next week is read-a-thon week, so that should be fun!

My Soul To Take (Review)

Soul Screamers: My Soul to Take | Rachel Vincent
Published by:Mira Ink, January 1st 2011
Genre: YA, Paranormal, Mythology
Pages: 345
Format: Paperback
Source: Purchased

Something is wrong with Kaylee Cavanaugh...

She can sense when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest boy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about the dark forces behind Kaylee's power than she does.

And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason and only Kaylee knows who'll be next, she realises that finding a boyfriend is the least of her worries!

I think I've stepped into some parallel universe where books that have been over-hyped are ... really good? What? That wasn't meant to happen.

I started reading this, not expecting much, because I wanted to see how other authors handled large series plots within each book's plot. Soul Screamers is seven books, I think, so it was an obvious choice. Also paranormal and based on myth.

But holy hell I did not expect the thrill ride of awesome that this book was. It started out strong and stayed strong. There was a murder mystery, a girl learning she wasn't really human, and a real teenage romance. The relationship between Kaylee and Nash felt the most realistic of every romance I've read. I totally thought Nash would turn out to be a siren though, and kinda sad I didn't get siren!Nash.

I was hooked from the first chapter of this wonderful book and breezed through it in no time. I'm so happy I took a chance on My Soul to Save.
