Review: Shadowcaster

Shattered Realms: Shadowcaster | Cinda Williams Chima

Alyssa ana'Raisa is the reluctant princess heir to the Gray Wolf throne of Fells, a queendom embroiled in a seemingly endless war. Hardened by too many losses, Lyss is more comfortable striking with a sword than maneuvering at court. After a brush with death, she goes on the offensive, meaning to end the war that has raged her whole life. If her gamble doesn't pay off, she could lose her queendom before she even ascends to the throne.

Across enemy lines in Arden, young rising star Captain Halston Matelon has been fighting for his king since he was a lĂ˝tling. Lately, though, he finds himself sent on ever more dangerous assignments. Between the terrifying rumors of witches and wolfish warriors to the north and his cruel king at home, Hal is caught in an impossible game of life and death.

Set in the world of the acclaimed Seven Realms series, this is a thrilling story of the unfathomable costs of war, the allure of dark magic, and two principled and conflicted characters, drawn together despite everything they stand to lose.
Okay so this was great but... I didn't love it.

And here's the thing - there's a lot in this that's pretty great. It does a good job of demonstrating different kinds of being feminine, showing women can be soldiers too (even if it does make Lyss really adhere to masculine tropes to do so, she really holds her own and lets herself be soft and romantic without seeing that as diminishing from her fighting and captaining.) There's really nothing that I don't like, except was it a little slow? Or was it the perfect pace to show how war really builds? Anyway, I really like Lyss, I still like Jenna and her dragon (!), and I fell so hard in love with Hal Matelon. Plus the world is amazingly built and feels so real. What I reaaaally liked was Lyss is a broad, muscular girl who isn't actually that pretty at all - and she doesn't give a shit!!

We don't see any character from the first book until halfway through the book which is 1) frustrating because I wanna see Adrian and 2) pretty darn cool actually. We get to see what's going on in a different part of the world while Arden goes to shit, and get closer to the Fellsian royals. I can't really pinoint what I don't like about Shadowcaster, if there is anything at all.

While I didn't fall head over heels for this book, I can't think of one thing I'd change. But please let there be Adrian in the next book!

A burning vengeance.

Adrian sul’Han, known as Ash, is a trained healer with a powerful gift of magic—and a thirst for revenge. The son of the queen of the Fells, Ash is forced into hiding after a series of murders throws the queendom into chaos. Now Ash is closer than he’s ever been to killing the man responsible, the cruel king of Arden. As a healer, can Ash use his powers not to save a life but to take it?

A blood-based curse.

Abandoned at birth, Jenna Bandelow was told the mysterious magemark on the back of her neck would make her a target. But when the King’s Guard launches a relentless search for a girl with a mark like hers, Jenna assumes that it has more to do with her role as a saboteur than any birth-based curse. Though Jenna doesn’t know why she’s being hunted, she knows that she can’t get caught.

Destiny’s fiery hand.

Eventually, Ash’s and Jenna’s paths will collide in Arden. Thrown together by chance and joined by their hatred of the king, they will come to rescue each other in ways they cannot yet imagine.

Set in the world of the acclaimed Seven Realms series a generation later, this is a thrilling story of dark magic, chilling threats, and two unforgettable characters walking a knife-sharp line between life and death.

This is definitely my favourite Cinda Williams Chima book I've read. Much faster paced, exciting, and I connected with the characters better. Here are my thoughts:

- I really love Ash and Lila, and Jenna grew on me. I wanna keep Destin forever.

- REALLY hoped for Jenna/Destin. I wasn't that sold on Jenna/Ash

- The story was complex and exciting. I can't wait to see all elements weave together and the story play out in later books.

- I LOVE the world, especially with the hints about magic on other continents. I feel like the islanders are gonna be awesome. (Though I could do without the 'exotic savages' trope....)

- Kinda cool how Jenna's birthmark is metal and a gem. Not seen that before.

- DRAGONS! YASS! BRING IT ON!

- I have so much hope for this series. Great characters, awesome world, promising story. Excited to read more!

Reading round up (42)

Reading round up is a weekly journal where I record my daily reading progress, my thoughts on each book as I read it, and any books I've acquired during the week. ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

2nd September
Current page/percent: page 181
Read today: 80 pages
Thoughts: Raisa/Amon isn't gonna be endgame and it's gonna break me. I DON'T WANT Han with Raisa. I want Han with Dancer, dammit!

3rd September

Current page/percent: page 225
Read today: 44 pages
Thoughts: Changing my mind. Han/Micah OTP.

4th September

Current page/percent: page 237
Read today: 12 pages
Thoughts: I've got to LITERALLY the same point with this book and lost interest. Think I'll start something else to break it up a little.

5th September

I started Feral by Holly Schindler because I need a couple days break to recoup with The Exiled Queen. I read 21% of Feral and I am really intrigued.

6th September

Currently reading:
Feral by Holly Schindler
Current page/percent: 58%
Read today: 37%
Thoughts: I was really liking it up until the last chapter I read where everything went BATSHIT INSANE. I'm usually all in favour of the paranormal, but this time I was hoping the girl's just suffering from PTSD and hallucinating. Still hoping tbh. That would be better than Cat Possession.

Also I read a tonne of short stories which I am too lazy to list. You can find them on the Read in 2014 if you're curious.

7th September

Currently reading:
Feral by Holly Schindler
Current page/percent: 100%
Read today: 42%
Thoughts: BEST. POSSIBLE. ENDING. Also check out my prediction up above. I'm practically psychic.

Books finished this week: 1 (and a tonne of shorts)
(I spent most of this week watching Parcs and Rec ngl)

Okay I'm getting lazy with these now. I bought Timebound by I don't know who, The Lost by Sarah Beth Durst, and something or other Dares Book? by that one author everyone knows, even though I don't love (read: actually like) contemporary stuff. I also got the first Stempunk book by Kady Cross, which I am much more excited about.

I'm having a busy yet unfortunately lazy week. Sorry for the quality drop. This will get much better when my book's out I promise.

I have a stupid crush on Ben Wyatt from Parcs and Rec. It's horrible. I don't need to love another character. But he's so adorable and I want one. (I'm literally not kidding, I want one. I am horribly lonely. Feel sorry for me.)
