The graphic novel debut from rising star Noelle Stevenson, based on her beloved and critically acclaimed web comic, which Slate awarded its Cartoonist Studio Prize, calling it "a deadpan epic."

Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel is perfect for the legions of fans of the web comic and is sure to win Noelle many new ones.

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are.

But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

AHHHH, YOU GUYS. How do I begin to review this? Nimona is a masterpiece. A literal, hilarious, heartwarming masterpiece. I fell super hard for this story.

Nimona is the perfect combination of rascal, reckless, competant villain, and traumatising back story. I love her so damn much. I loved her from page 1,. Or maybe page 2. Basically from 'I'M A SHARK'. She's a fricken shape shifter, and she questions all the dumb typical villain stuff, and she kicks Ballister into gear, and she gets shit done. Boy I love her.

The other characters were crazy cool too. Ballister is a do-gooder villain who won't kill anyone and has morals. He's a terrible villain but a genuine sweetheart. I loved the relationship he developed with Nimona, and I adored his arch-nemesis thing with Goldenloin (what a name, folks! what a name). Goldenloin is another terribly moral do-gooder, but I liked his selflessness and his undying love for Ballister. (Nemesis is code for boyfriend)

This is just a super good comic. It's fun and witty and serious when it needs to be. There's plenty of action and things blowing up (and doors getting charged through,) The story itself is thoroughly original and the art iconic and recognisable. I love this book so so much. Can't wait to own it and read the epilogue!!

Sidenote: I love that Nimona is a fat girl and is never shamed for it, never feels insecure for it & how her story never revolves around her weight. It's not an obstacle for her to overcome. Hell yes to positive fat girl role models!!

Reading round up (61)

Reading round up is a weekly journal where I record my daily reading progress, my thoughts on each book as I read it, and any books I've acquired during the week.

12th January

Currently Reading: Avalon by Mindee Arnett
Current page/percent: page 102
Read today: 68 pages
Thoughts: Too tired to read much. Hoping to read much more tomorrow!!

13th January

Currently Reading: Avalon by Mindee Arnett
Current page/percent: page 154
Read today: 185 pages
Thoughts: this is taking so long to read. See, this is why hardbacks and me don't usually mix. I read it so quick on the ebook!!

14th January

Taking a break from Avalon because I am in an awful mood and don't want to ruin the book by being shitty. I'm finally reading Vicious by V. E. Schwab, a book I got a 100 page preview of and loved.

15th January

Read 84 pages of Vicious and 56 pages of Avalon. I'm so excited to see where Vicious goes now that I'm past the pages I've already read. Loving both of these.

16th January

Read 98 pages of Vicious, taking me to 247. Was hoping to finish this today but the text is small, so there's more book in 100 pages than I'm used to.

17th January

I started, read, and finished Nimona by Noelle Stevenson in a day. Oh God it's so perfect. Stupid graphic novel. I need more.

I also read 19 pages of Vicious. Oop. It took a serious dive in my priorities when I started Nimona.

18th January

Having a crappy day, and crappy days affect my reading badly. I only read 45 pages of Vicious.

Books finished this week: 1
(oh boy this was a bad week for reading)

These are the books I got for Christmas - they finally arrived!! Forgive the grainy photo.

Illusions of Fate (my baby), Suspicion, These Broken Stars (about time I read this!), Stitching Snow, Hold Me Closer, Necromancer, Deception, After The End (my fave), Riot, Vicious, Skylark, The Goddess Test, Scarlet, Atlantia, Princess of Thorns, Rebel Spring, and Gathering Darkness.

Nimona | Noelle Stevenson
I started reading this a year to two years ago, but I find it really hard to concentrate with online comics so I never really got far. I am thrilled that it's going to be published in physical form!!!! Although I started to read it and there are definite pages missing... :(
